In 2019, Metcalf Elementary teachers were inspired by an educational conference they attended called Get Your Teach On. Get Your Teach On promotes an event called Rock Your School - this is a day about students and a community of educators celebrating the little things by bringing extraordinary learning experiences into an ordinary day. Since then, Metcalf has rocked their school each year with different themes including Rock, Neon Glow, Disney, “Starbooks,” Camping, and more. That’s why on September 13th, Metcalf Elementary came together for Totally Rad 90’s Day!
Teachers planned engaging lessons centered around innovation, creativity, 90’s nostalgia, and fun in accordance with our theme. Totally Rad 90’s Day was all about having engaging learning experiences. Students and staff alike could be seen in their best 90’s fashion, including overalls and fanny packs. The day started with teachers putting on a 90’s concert for students, with iconic hits like the Backstreet Boys, “I Want It That Way,” and the Spice Girls, “Spice Up Your Life.” Classrooms were transformed into retro, neon spaces. Students could be seen playing pogs and other 90’s board games, weaving keychains, making friendship bracelets, doing sand art, learning math with pick-up sticks, learning science with lava lamps and much more .
Teamwork, effort, passion, and smiles made it a great day.
It was an opportunity to bring extra magic and fun into what could have been known as an ordinary day of school.
“While academic rigor is essential, so is fun and building relationships. We are fortunate to work with a staff that builds a love for learning through dynamic lessons, not only on special occasions but each day,” said Chelsea Adams, principal.
