Morenci Track and Field
In the 1980’s and 1990’s Morenci High School consistently produced squads that competed at the highest levels and produced many state championships. These programs lead by Coaches Jack Edens and David Woodall produced many collegiate athletes as well as teams that brought home the state title on a consistent basis. Moreover this programs success during that time span lead to their being named one of Arizona’s top 25 Track & Field programs ever regardless of classification, by the Arizona Republic. Two standout runners from this era were Ted Holt (4x state champion in the Mile, scholarship to NMSU Track, Cross Country) and Hector Salazar (4x state champion in the Mile, scholarship for Track to the University of Florida).
In 2013, fourth year Coach Ken Lester had a squad of experienced runners who made a real difference. This squads highlights were breaking the school 4x400m relay record, then breaking their own record on three more occasions. This squad won the 4x400 at the Willie Williams (held at UofA) besting large classification schools from El Paso, Tucson and Phoenix. Later, at the 95 team Sun Angel relays at ASU the 4x4 squad placed third to powerhouses Mountain Pointe and Gilbert Highland and besting Track Giants Chandler and Chandler Hamilton. Morenci also put Daniom Tecle in the finals (400m), the only 2A School to have athletes compete in the finals. Daniom Tecle also won State placing 1st in the 800m and 2nd in the 400m. The Boys team was runner-up that year missing a state championship by 6 points to Arizona Lutheran, and setting the school record one last time at the 2013 Brophy Meet of Champions with a 3:23.94 and a second place finish.
We first stress hard work and knowledge of ones events. We believe that we can outwork our competition and compete with anyone regardless of school classification (size). When an athlete is competing in their event no one can help them. To garner success they must see through to the other side of the process and have both the discipline and work ethic to do so. If they will consent to this, we will help them become as strong and as technically well-trained as an athlete can become at this level. Some of the best athletes, especially in American Football, come out of track & field. “Speed Kills”, we all know that-but a lineman who has balance, control and explosiveness is much more dangerous than merely a “big” lineman who cannot move as well. Morenci Track and Field has sent many athletes to the “next level”, and this is perhaps our proudest achievement as it has enabled dreams to come true.
If you are interested in one of the 18 events in Track & Field and want to experience something that will never leave you please contact coach Ken Lester or any Track & Field athlete. We need YOU in order to build CHAMPIONS!!
