Important Back to School Notice

Dear Wildcat Community,

I hope this message finds you and your family well.

Morenci School District is finishing week two of school using a hybrid model. It has been nice to have students back on campus after almost six months of remote learning. Our student body has been great and quickly adjusted to new practices and procedures that have been implemented.

We are pleased to announce that we have set Monday, September 21st as the target date for all students to return to school on a daily basis, Monday through Friday. The COVID Benchmarks for Greenlee County continue to be extremely positive and currently reflect only one active case in the county. These benchmarks and other COVID data will be continually monitored as we approach the 21st.

Upon return to school students and staff will continue to utilize masks and observe social distancing to the extent possible in a school environment.

Last week the Arizona Interscholastic Association, after meeting with their sports medicine committee has tentatively approved schedules for fall sports competitions. Students are now cleared to begin regular practice routines and we will begin reviewing possible guidelines that would allow spectators at competitive events.

I’m also pleased to share that the United States Department of Agriculture has extended the program that provided free lunches to any child up to 18 years of age this summer. Effective immediately there will be no charge for student lunches at school. In addition, beginning Monday, September 14th parents may pick up lunches outside of the Fairbanks cafeteria for children who are learning at home or not yet school age. Lunches may be picked up between 11:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. We anticipate this program will continue through December of 2020.

I know we all look forward to a return to more normal times - these are steps in that direction. It is critical that as we take these steps we continue to be cautious and observe healthy practices at school and in and outside of our community.

Sincerely,
Dr. David Woodall
